BGS 10 Pristine vs Gem Mint 9.5 vs Black Label: Beckett's grades, explained with real prices
Beckett's top grades confuse a lot of collectors, partly because the names don't match PSA's. Here's what a BGS Pristine 10, a Gem Mint 9.5 and a Black Label each mean, what they sell for against PSA 10 and CGC 10 on the same cards, and how the Pristine and Gem Mint 10s from CGC, TAG and SGC fit alongside them.
The short version. On Beckett's scale, 10 is Pristine and 9.5 is Gem Mint. A Black Label is a Pristine 10 with all four subgrades at 10, and it's the Beckett grade collectors chase: a Black Label Moonbreon has sold for $23,500 to $32,500 in 2026, against about $4,000 for a PSA 10. Black Labels are rare enough that most cards have few or no recorded sales. A BGS 9.5 sold for about 42% to 72% of a PSA 10 on the cards below.
What's the difference between BGS Pristine 10 and Gem Mint?
BGS 10 is Pristine, Beckett's top grade. BGS 9.5 is Gem Mint, one step below. A "Gem Mint 10" isn't a Beckett grade: people often use the name for a gold-label Pristine 10, but Beckett's own word for a 10 is Pristine.
Beckett grades in half points and prints four subgrades on most labels: centering, corners, edges and surface. The overall grade comes from those four, weighted toward the weakest. That's the real difference from PSA, which gives one number with no breakdown: with Beckett you can see that a 9.5 missed a 10 because of, say, one soft corner. The label colour tells you the tier at a glance.
| Beckett grade | Label | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Pristine 10, Black Label | Black | A Pristine 10 with all four subgrades at 10. The rarest Beckett grade |
| Pristine 10 | Gold | Beckett's top overall grade, but with at least one subgrade below 10, usually a 9.5 |
| Gem Mint 9.5 | Gold | Near-perfect, with flaws that show only under magnification |
| Mint 9 and below | Silver | Every other grade |
What is a BGS Black Label?
A Black Label is a BGS Pristine 10 with a 10 in every subgrade. A Pristine 10 with three 10s and one 9.5 gets a gold label instead, which is why a gold-label 10 and a Black Label of the same card can sell for very different prices.
Black Labels are rare enough that many cards have only a handful, and they usually sell at a large premium over gold-label 10s. Centering is what most often stops a card: Beckett's Pristine standard calls for essentially perfect 50/50 centering on the front. If you're thinking of submitting to Beckett for a Black Label, measure the card first with the centering tool: anything visibly off 50/50 won't get there.
Gold label 10 vs Black Label: what's the difference?
Both are BGS Pristine 10s. A Black Label has a 10 in all four subgrades; a gold-label Pristine 10 has at least one subgrade below 10, usually a single 9.5. That one half point is the difference between one of the rarest grades in the hobby and a standard Beckett 10.
| Pristine 10, gold label | Pristine 10, Black Label | |
|---|---|---|
| Overall grade | 10 | 10 |
| Subgrades | At least one below 10, usually three 10s and a 9.5 | All four at 10: centering, corners, edges, surface |
| Label | Gold, the same colour as a Gem Mint 9.5 | Black |
| How rare | Uncommon | Very rare; many cards have only a handful |
| Price | Usually close to a PSA 10 | Often several times a PSA 10 |
That's why this page shows Black Label prices only. Sales records often lump gold-label 10s and Black Labels together as "BGS 10", which makes the average meaningless: one Black Label sale can be worth more than a dozen gold-label ones. When you look at a BGS 10 listing, check the label colour and the four subgrades on the slab before trusting the price.
What does a BGS Black Label sell for?
The best-recorded example is the Moonbreon, the Umbreon VMAX alt art: Black Labels sold for $23,500 in February 2026 and $32,500 at Heritage in July 2026, about six to eight times its PSA 10 price of roughly $4,000.

What do BGS 9.5 Gem Mints sell for, against PSA 10 and CGC 10?
On these popular cards, a BGS 9.5 Gem Mint sold for about 42% to 72% of a PSA 10. A CGC 10 sold for less than a PSA 10 on every card.

Should you grade with Beckett or PSA?
For most cards, PSA, because PSA 10s are the most widely traded and sell reliably. Beckett makes sense for modern cards you're confident are flawless, where a Black Label can be worth several times a PSA 10, and when you want the subgrades.
The catch is what happens when a card falls short. A card that just misses perfection might still get a PSA 10, but come back a BGS 9.5, and a BGS 9.5 sold for well under a PSA 10 on every card above. So Beckett is a bet on a card being genuinely exceptional. If you're not sure, the checker estimates the grade from photos, and the PSA 10 price guide shows what a PSA 10 is worth against a 9.
How do CGC, TAG and SGC 10s compare?
All three split their top grade in two, like Beckett: CGC, TAG and SGC each have a Gem Mint 10 and a stricter Pristine 10. PSA is the only major grader with a single 10.
| Grader | Top grade | The standard 10 | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| PSA | Gem Mint 10 | Gem Mint 10 | One 10, no subgrades. The most traded slab for Pokémon |
| Beckett (BGS) | Pristine 10, Black Label | Pristine 10 (gold) | Four subgrades on the label; Gem Mint is the 9.5 |
| CGC | Pristine 10 | Gem Mint 10 | A Gem Mint 10 is a 10 overall where one criterion falls short of Pristine |
| TAG | Pristine 10 (score 990 to 1,000) | Gem Mint 10 (950 to 989) | A 1,000-point score on the label shows how strong the 10 is; no 9.5 |
| SGC | Pristine 10 | Gem Mint 10 | Pristine carries a gold label; best known for vintage |
TAG, short for Technical Authentication & Grading, grades with computer imaging and gives most cards a 1,000-point score as well as the usual 1 to 10 grade, so two Gem Mint 10s can be told apart: a 951 only just made it, while a 989 nearly reached Pristine. TAG says its Pristine 10 exceeds the industry standard for a Gem Mint 10 and makes up under 1% of the cards it grades. TAG slabs trade in smaller numbers than PSA, Beckett or CGC, so there isn't enough sales data to compare their prices here yet.
Common questions
Is a BGS 10 better than a PSA 10?
A Black Label BGS 10 is the strictest grade in the hobby and can sell for several times a PSA 10: a Black Label Moonbreon sold for $32,500 in July 2026 against about $4,000 for a PSA 10. But a card that just misses comes back a BGS 9.5, which sells for well under a PSA 10.
What is the difference between BGS Pristine 10 and Gem Mint?
On Beckett's scale, 10 is Pristine and 9.5 is Gem Mint. Both get a gold label. The top tier, a Black Label, is a Pristine 10 with all four subgrades at 10.
What is the difference between a gold label 10 and a Black Label?
Both are BGS Pristine 10s. A Black Label has all four subgrades at 10; a gold-label 10 has at least one subgrade below 10, usually a 9.5. Black Labels are far rarer and sell for much more.
Is BGS 9.5 the same as PSA 10?
They're both called Gem Mint, but they don't sell the same. On popular cards in October 2026, a BGS 9.5 sold for roughly 42% to 72% of a PSA 10.
What is a TAG Pristine 10?
TAG's top grade, for cards scoring 990 to 1,000 on its 1,000-point scale. A TAG Gem Mint 10 scores 950 to 989.
Do CGC and SGC have Pristine 10s?
Yes. Both have a Gem Mint 10 and a stricter Pristine 10. PSA is the only major grader with a single 10.
