PSA 10 Pokémon cards: what a 10 needs, and what it's worth
A PSA 10 is the grade every collector hopes for, and the one that moves prices most. Here's what a card needs to get one, what twelve popular Pokémon cards sell for at PSA 10 against PSA 9 and raw, and the surprise in the numbers: for expensive modern cards, a 9 can be worth less than no grade at all. For Beckett, CGC and TAG 10s, see BGS 10 Pristine vs Gem Mint.
The short version. A PSA 10, Gem Mint, needs four sharp corners, clean edges and surface, and centering of 55/45 or better on the front and 75/25 on the back. Across the cards below, a PSA 10 sells for 1.7 to 14 times the raw price, with old Base Set holos and cheaper modern chase cards gaining the most. But for four of the twelve, a PSA 9 sells for less than a raw copy, so grading only pays when a 10 is likely.
What is a PSA 10?
PSA 10 is Gem Mint, PSA's top regular grade: a card with four sharp corners, clean edges, a surface free of wear beyond tiny printing flaws, and centering of 55/45 or better on the front and 75/25 or better on the back.
Centering is the part you can measure yourself, and it's a hard cap: a card at 57/43 on the front can't be a 10 however perfect the rest is. The centering guide explains the limits for every grade, and the free PSA centering tool measures a card from a photo. Corners, edges and surface are judged under magnification, which is why the same card can look flawless in hand and come back a 9.

Among these popular cards, PSA 10 copies sell for about $336 to $9,900. Base Set Charizard leads at about $9,900, and Umbreon ex from Prismatic Evolutions is next at about $5,000.

Raw is TCGplayer's market price. Graded prices are medians of recent eBay sales, from 35 to 1,011 PSA 10 sales per card. Prices from October 29, 2026; each card's page has today's figures. Shadowless Charizard and Neo Genesis Lugia are left out because too few PSA 10s have sold to give a reliable price.
Which cards gain the most from a PSA 10?
Old Base Set holos and cheaper modern chase cards. A PSA 10 Blastoise sells for about 14 times a raw copy, and a PSA 10 Mew ex from 30th Celebration for about 14 times. Expensive modern alternate arts gain the least, about 1.7 to 2.3 times.
The pattern makes sense. Vintage cards were printed and handled in an era with no sleeves or penny pockets, so 10s are scarce and buyers pay heavily for them. Modern alternate arts are already expensive raw, because collectors buy them for the art, so a 10 adds proportionally less. The best grading candidates sit in the middle: cards cheap enough raw that a 10 multiplies their value, with clean centering you can check first.
Can a PSA 9 be worth less than raw?
Yes. For four of these twelve cards, all expensive modern cards, a PSA 9 sells below the raw price. The Umbreon VMAX alt art, known as Moonbreon, is about $2,325 raw but about $2,000 as a PSA 9.
The other three are the Rayquaza VMAX alt art (about $1,223 raw, $1,020 as a PSA 9), the Gengar VMAX alt art ($1,010 raw, $900) and the rainbow Pikachu VMAX ($168 raw, $150). A raw copy keeps the hope of a 10 alive, and buyers pay for that hope; a 9 settles the question, and not in the buyer's favour. So for cards like these, send one to PSA only when you're confident it's a 10, after checking centering and looking hard at the corners and surface. The PSA 9 vs PSA 10 guide covers the gap in more detail.
How do I know if my card could be a PSA 10?
Check centering first, since it's a hard limit: 55/45 or better on the front. Then look for any white on the corners and edges, and tilt the card under a light to look for scratches and print lines.
Take the card out of its sleeve, because plastic hides wear. Measure the centering with the centering tool, or photograph the card in the checker, which estimates the grade from the front, back and a tilted photo, and prices the grading at the PSA tier the card's value needs.
Is it worth grading a card for a PSA 10?
Only when the gain at a 10 is large and a 10 is likely. A Charizard ex 223/197 is about $86 raw and $735 as a PSA 10, so a 10 gains about $564 after roughly $85 of grading. But as a PSA 9 at $142.50 it loses money, about $28.
That's the sum to run for any card: the value at the grade it will most likely get, minus the raw value, minus the cost of the PSA tier it needs. The grading calculator does it with eBay's selling fees included, and the PSA cost guide lists every tier.
